CDC Presents Scientific Scholarship at ATS 2019 Conference

CDC Programs Manager, Morgan DeNicola, in partnership with the American Thoracic Society, presented a 2019 Scientific Scholarship to Ahmed Ddungu of Uganda at this year's ATS International Conference in Dallas TX . The scholarship was presented to Ahmed for his research regarding screening HIV patients in Africa for (COPD) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide . Data from Africa indicates that the prevalence of COPD is high (up to 25%). Ahmed’s research sought out to determine its association with HIV. His findings determined that although low in this HIV infected population he recommended that these patients be proactively screened.

“I was proud to recognize this great young scientist. Quality of life issues surrounding Respiratory Disease is one of our Passions,” stated Morgan DeNicola.

The award was given during the International Scholars Poster Colloquium. The special session was organized by the International Health Committee to enhance and foster collaboration. Gustavo Matute-Bello, MD (Chairman ATS International Lung health Committee) touted the benefits of the ATS MECOR and ITS programs ATS International Conference Committee Chair Jess Mandel, MD, highlighted the ongoing research, critical care and pulmonary treatments available., ATS 2020 will be held May 15-20 in CDC’s Hometown Philadelphia Pa
